Honor

To have/express great respect for someone or something; to treat with significance. To uphold and/or keep an agreement or commitment.

Back in 2005, I was inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball to honor the women in my life. Those who have shared, cared, labored, and loved me. Women who have walked with me through silent tears, occasional fears, and memorable cheers. I envisioned a formal appreciation dinner, with live entertainment and awards or a celebration party, with a deejay and gift giveaways. Then I realized, just because I was inspired by Oprah, didn’t mean I had to honor my guests the same way she did.
Earlier this year, I created and designed my own “honor boxes”; for each of my “Vessels of Honor”. Inside each box were carefully selected items that represented me and expressed my love and appreciation for them. Some items were similar, while others were tailored to the individual. One box was hand-delivered; the other nine were randomly shipped.
When I think of honor, I think about character. Do what you say you are going to do. Keep your word; including the promises you make to yourself. Yes, life happens and sometimes things don’t always go as planned. We all have the freedom to change our mind and/or make necessary adjustments; but we don’t have to lie about it. Good intentions don’t always honor commitments; but good character often does.
Some of my “Vessels of Honor” were speechless and some cried; but all of them were surprised to receive a gift, “Just Because.” Me, on the other hand, I was honored.
